Having dry eyes is no fun. You might be experiencing it if your eyes feel sticky or gritty, especially when you blink. You may also experience itchiness and stinging pain.

Dry eyes can be a temporary condition (such as if you keep contacts in for too long), but it can also be chronic. Dry eye occurs whenever your tear glands aren’t producing enough tears to keep your eyes lubricated, or if tears evaporate too quickly. When you are over fifty (50), dry eye becomes more common, as your tear ducts stop producing tears as frequently.

Dry eye can leave you with infections or other complications, but luckily there is relief for these conditions. Natural dry eye treatments are also available.

Relief for Dry Eye

If your dry eye pain is usually just temporary, consider just being sure to keep eye drops on hand. Eye drops, however, come in different types. There are eye drops that are made specifically for people who wear contacts, so if you are a contact wearer, you should purchase a “rewetter” type of eye drop to keep your eyes from feeling better. You should also be sure you’re using a quality contact lens solution when you’re not wearing them, to ensure your contacts stay lubricated for when you need to wear them again.

If your dry eyes are being caused by allergens (such as pollen from trees or dander from pets), you would need to use allergy-type eye drops.

Last but not least, if you’re experiencing dry eye but not from allergies or eyewear, you would need to purchase eye drops that are labeled as ‘artificial tears’. Artificial tears mimic the sort of tears your tear glands should be producing, and are best at relubricating your eyes from time to time and help stimulate your tear ducts.

If you’re experiencing more chronic dry eye and over-the-counter eye drops don’t seem to help as well as they should, you should consider making an appointment with your eye doctor. They may be able to prescribe prescription eye drops for your to try in order to alleviate your symptoms.
